The undefeated Wisconsin GLO will attempt to sweep their three-game regular season series with Global Women’s Basketball Association rival St. Louis Surge when the teams meet for a non-league contest Sunday, June 30 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Up next: Wisconsin GLO (9-0) at St. Louis Surge (1-2). Opening tip at 3:05 p.m. Sunday in the Washington University Fieldhouse in St. Louis.
Last meetings: The GLO previously downed the Surge by scores of 92-66 May 18 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and 107-70 June 15 in St. Louis. Both prior matchups counted in the GWBA standings.
Wisconsin never trailed in the first meeting between the teams as Gabbi Ortiz paced five GLO double-digit scorers with 17 points. The GLO limited St. Louis to a .310 field goal percentage and led by as many as 28 points during the first GWBA game for both franchises.
The GLO then dominated the highly anticipated rematch with the Surge, shooting 65.7 percent from the field, 50 percent from 3-point range and 87.5 percent at the free throw line on the way to scoring more than 100 points for the first time in team history. GLO guard Jolene Anderson was tabbed GWBA Player of the Week for the second time this season after recording a game-high 25 points and a team-leading five rebounds.

The GLO opened the game with a 20-0 lead, scored at least 30 points in each quarter, and finished the night with advantages of 73-24 in rebounds and 33-6 in assists.
Taylor Wurtz led the GLO’s offensive onslaught with 18 points to go along with five assists. Gabbi Ortiz, who was voted GWBA Player of the Week, had 10 points, four rebounds and five assists. Jessica Lindstrom pulled down 14 rebounds for Wisconsin, including seven on the offensive end.
June 23 GLO highlights: Wisconsin owned a 42-8 lead after one period and finished the day with team records for made 3-pointers (21), points in a quarter (42), points in a half (69) and assists (35). The GLO outshot the Breeze, 55.8 to 31 percent, from the floor and registered assists on 35 of 43 made field goals.
Mehryn Kraker led all players with 22 points and six assists for the GLO. Jessica Lindstrom recorded 18 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Kraker and Lindstrom combined to shoot 16 of 19 from the field, including 8-for-9 from 3-point range.
Obliterating the competition: The Wisconsin GLO’s perfect start in their inaugural campaign has included just one win by less than 25 points. The GLO’s 47.7-point average margin of victory on the season has included wins in their last three contests by differences of 63, 72 and 68 points.
Stout on both ends of the floor: The GLO are scoring 100.8 points per game on the year behind a star-studded roster that has shared the offensive spotlight. Twenty players have contributed points for Wisconsin this season and 15 members of the GLO have tallied at least nine points in a game for a squad that has had five different leading scorers (Gabbi Ortiz thrice, Mehryn Kraker and Taylor Wurtz twice, Jolene Anderson and Allie LeClaire once) through nine games. The GLO have knocked down 95 3-pointers, including a team-high 18 from Ortiz and 14 from Kraker, who is 11-for-12 from beyond the arc over the past three games.
The GLO defense, yielding just 53.1 points per contest, has not allowed an opponent to shoot better than 37 percent from the field this season. Wisconsin’s defensive performances have enabled the GLO to jump out to leads of 31-0 over the Chicago Breeze on June 8 and 20-0 against the Music City Icons on June 22. The GLO, who have collected at least 13 steals in each of the past six games, are also limiting second chances by surrendering a mere 20 offensive rebounds while collecting 68 of their own during the last three contests.
Scouting the Surge: St. Louis has been idle since its 37-point home loss to the Wisconsin GLO on June 15. The Surge play their fourth game of the season June 29, when they host the Music City Icons for a GWBA contest.
Guard Rebecca Harris spearheads a St. Louis team that is averaging 80.3 points per game this season. The Surge’s lone win on the year was a 105-89 home triumph over the three-time defending GWBA champion Flint Monarchs.
Harris, a nine-year pro after a collegiate career at Illinois, was named the GWBA Player of the Week after pouring in 35 points during the Surge’s win over the Monarchs. Harris was held to 11 points against the GLO on June 15.
In St. Louis’ most recent matchup with Wisconsin, Mikala McGhee (Florida Gulf Coast) led the Surge with 13 points off the bench while Nakiah Bell (SIU Edwardsville), Kristi Bellock (Texas A&M) and Nici Gilday (Santa Clara) each added 11.
St. Louis, along with the Wisconsin GLO, joined the GWBA this season. The Surge previously prospered in the 32-team Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League, winning WBCBL championships in 2014 and 2016 and reaching the league finals in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2018. St. Louis compiled an 87-15 record from 2012-18.
Next GLO home game: Wisconsin hosts the three-time reigning GWBA champion Flint Monarchs on Saturday, July 13 at 7 p.m. in Menominee Nation Arena. The GLO can clinch the outright GWBA title with a win over Flint. The July 13 contest, the GLO’s last regular season home game before the GWBA playoffs commence in August, will include a Wisconsin Tropics T-shirt (adult sizes) fan giveaway and concession specials on Hawaiian chicken sandwiches and tropical-themed slush drinks.
