Global Women’s Basketball Association Standings
Team                          GWBA            Overall

Wisconsin GLO             1-0                   3-0
Flint Monarchs             1-0                   1-2
Music City Icons           0-1                   0-1
St. Louis Surge              0-1                   0-1

Impressive start: The GLO’s 3-0 record to open their debut season began with a pair of non-league wins over the three-time reigning GWBA champion Flint Monarchs, who went 21-3 overall during the previous three seasons. The GLO then began their GWBA slate with a comfortable win over fellow league newcomer St. Louis Surge. The Surge had won two national championships in their former home – the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League – claiming titles in 2014 and 2016, while finishing as the runners-up in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2018 in the 32-team WBCBL.

May 18 highlights: The GLO never trailed the St. Louis Surge in the franchises’ first game in the GWBA as they built a 43-29 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter. Gabbi Ortiz, the GLO’s leading scorer each game this season, paced five Wisconsin double-digit scorers with a game-high 17 points. Sam Logic added 16 points and five assists for the GLO while Kelly Moten had 14 points, and Jolene Anderson and Steph Kostowicz chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Scouting the Icons: The Music City Icons, founded in 2017, played in the WBCBL (now named the Women’s Basketball Development Association) the past two seasons. Music City advanced to the WBCBL’s Atlantic Regional championship game last season.

The Icons lost their GWBA opener, 82-76, to the Flint Monarchs on May 18 in Nashville, Tennessee. Music City owned a 47-39 lead at halftime, but Flint outscored the Icons, 29-14, during the third period as the Monarchs’ Arlesia Morse, the GWBA Player of the Week, ended the contest with 27 points and 11 rebounds.

Lauren Elliott, a 2019 graduate of Tennessee State, led the Icons with 19 points while recent West Virginia State grad Anesha Harmon added 17 off the bench. Rounding out the Icon scorers were Middle Tennessee State all-conference performer Brea Edwards with 15 points, former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi leader Elisa Beagle with 10, and Calisha Clark and Lauren Folohun with eight apiece. Folohun, who played at South Carolina from 2007-10, is the current head women’s basketball coach at Fisk University.
