June 12th Game Recap!
Impressive first-half defensive showing propels Glo to remain undefeated.
It was an impressive defensive showing from the Wisconsin Glo as they held the Detroit Queens to just 22 first-half points and used their defensive effort to build a 27-point lead heading into the half.
Julie Wojta, Francesa Wurtz, and Hannah Whitish all tallied two steals with their energy and activeness, leading to stretches of empty possessions from the Queens offense. Jolene Anderson and Jessica Kelliher continued the defensive support down low as they both found the stat sheet with two rejections.
Wojta commented on the Glo’s first-half defensive success, “We played them recently, so we sort of knew what to expect, which allowed us to prepare for that and were able to put forward the effort needed in the first half.”
The Glo improved to 5-0 this season with Sunday’s 97-77 win over the Queens at The Oshkosh Arena and continued their dominance in hopes of defending their title as GWBA champs.
Waukesha native Kelliher led the Glo in scoring and rebounding as she posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds on an efficient 8-10 from the field.
With two free throws, a fast-break layup, and an and-one finish for the Queens, Brandy Beasley brought the Queens within 18 with just under two minutes left in the third. The Queens managed to outscore the Glo by nine following half-time as they tried inching their way back.
Beasley’s three-point bucket with just under four minutes remaining gave her 16 points on the night and would cut the Glo’s lead to 15, the smallest deficit of the half.
Tinara Moore also had an impressive showing for the Queens despite the loss as she scored 27 points, going 12 of 16 from the field.
The late push from the Queens would not be enough as a 14 point second half from Lauren Van Kleunen helped maintain the Glo’s lead.
The Glo’s next home game is scheduled for Saturday, June 25th at 7 p.m, vs. the Detroit Queens as the teams will meet for the third of their four season matchups. Tickets and information are available at www.wiscoglo.com or the Oshkosh Arena box office.
